Recycling details

By Stephanie DeJaeghere 4 min read

Congratulations Lyon County! The numbers are in and the residents of Lyon County exceeded last year's recycling weights!

The number of tons of trash that Lyon County residents put into the landfill in 2023 remained about the same as 2022. We can continue to reduce the amount of trash that goes into the landfill by keep on recycling everything that is recyclable and continue or learn how to compost food scraps.

As we work our way through the winter months, please be aware of a few things. If there are issues with recycling pick up, we will be alerting our residents via the county Facebook page as well as an online text notification system called TextMyGov. If you need details on how to sign up, please call our office or go online to the county webpage at www.lyonco.org for details.

As a reminder, we give our recycling hauler all day to make sure that everyone's recycling is picked up. They start approximately at 3 a.m. and finish around 6 p.m. on recycling day. If for some reason your recycling was missed, please call our office the next morning and let us know. We do not assign a specific time when recycling is picked up but we do assign a specific day.

If you have a cart that does not have a yellow lid and a green body, we would like to switch out your cart for you. It is a free service. If you cart has a broken lid, missing a wheel or the body of the cart is broken, we will exchange carts for these situations as well and this is free to residents. Please call our office and we will gladly assist you.

If you don't have a cart or are moving to a new location especially if it is a new house and need a cart, please call our office. Please do not take recycling carts from old addresses and move it to a new address. We need to notify the recycling hauler of the new address so that they can get you into their system or you may be missed on recycling day.

Please note that all carts that are switched out will be switched out with 95-gallon recycling carts.

Lyon County does not provide trash services, which is different from recycling services. Residents and businesses can self-haul trash to the landfill for a fee.

While curbside services are available only for those residents who live within city limits, we do provide recycling services for rural residents as well. We have drop sites in all of our cities in Lyon County and these containers are open 24/7 for residents to use.

Recycling, whether it is curbside recycling or the drop site recycling, is hauled to Redwood Falls to a transfer station just outside of Redwood Falls. From Redwood, the recycling is then hauled to Dem-Con in Shakopee.

The curbside recycling driver may need to leave his route for a short time if his truck is full. The driver empties his truck at the Redwood Falls transfer station when his truck is full. We currently have around 7,200 curbside stops to make during recycling week.

The drop sites are generally emptied once a week with the exception of Marshall, which is emptied twice a week. Florence and Taunton are generally emptied once a month because it takes longer for these sites to be filled. Any resident can use these drop sites if needed but they are generally reserved for rural residents to use.

Businesses must get their own recycling services. Businesses do not pay for recycling services through the special assessment on property taxes so they must make arrangements with their trash hauler for these services.

Please remember to not bag recycling. The system does not allow time for bags to be opened one by one to ensure that there isn't any trash in the bag. If you are still bagging, please be aware that at some point in the system, bagged recycling is thrown away.

For more information on recycling and disposal, please go to the Lyon County website at www.lyonco.org. You will find disposal information as well as calendars, phone numbers and other information. Residents can also give us a call at (507) 532-8210 (Environmental office, Household Hazardous Waste and Recycling Services). The landfill can be reached at (507) 865-4615.
