The social news or gossip columns in the old newspapers are always fascinating to read. A special section in the newspaper was devoted to the social media of the day. The whereabouts of local people and events were often featured in these columns. Here are a few from The News Messenger of Lyon County on Dec. 22, 1922:
Come to the Community Tree program Saturday evening.
Marvin Adler, student at Macalester College, St. Paul, is spending the holidays at the home of his parents in this city.
John J. Middleton is confined to his bed in the Marshall Hospital suffering with a badly infected eye but at this writing he seems to be improving nicely.
The Misses Agnes Olson and Mabel Christianson, students at Carleton College, arrived in this city Thursday to spend the holidays at their respective homes.
EVERYBODY is expected to be on hand at the Community Christmas Tree Saturday evening at 7 o’clock sharp.
George DeReu of the University of Minnesota is spending the holidays at the home of his mother, Mrs. Mary DeReu, in this city.
John Burchard is home from Boston for a two weeks’ vacation and visit at the home of his parents in this city.
Miss Florence Reber entertained three tables of young ladies at Progressive “500” at her home on Monday evening.
Joseph Pierard is spending the holiday vacation from his duties at Shattuck Military Academy at the home of his mother in this city.
There will be a regular meeting of the Legion Auxiliary at the Legion Hall next Tuesday evening, December 26th, at eight o’clock. A good attendance is desired.
The photograph featured this week from the Lyon County Museum’s collection is a postcard photograph of Main Street Marshall decorated for Christmas, taken in the late 1920s to early 1930s.
