Never lose it

By Ron Skjong 3 min read

The chance encounter reminder me of something I learned as a kid. My parents, through words and actions, always reminded me to respect the earth and to never lose that sense of respect.

On a recent afternoon, I was walking through a room filled with folks, and I saw a couple of elderly lady friends. They were giggling like mad!

Naturally, I stopped and asked why they were laughing. They conspiratorially looked at each other, and, again, broke out laughing. Boy! I loved that moment! I crossed my arms, and, trying to emulate a stern teacher but with a grin on my face, told them to behave themselves. One of them replied that was never going to happen, and we belly laughed together.

I was reminded that we should never lose our sense of humor.

At a recent wine tasting event, the theme was Sip and Share. Each attendee was encouraged to bring their favorite wine and share the wine's story and taste with the group. As the group assembled, there were soon 10 bottles of wine placed before us. As the host, I was thrilled! None of the offered wines were the same variety, and they were from very sweet to extremely dry offerings. I could sense a good time a'coming, and the party began.

Over 90 minutes later, the wines were all tasted and the stories told. Like always, some of the stories were long winded and some short and precise, but laughter flowed like the wine. The wine varieties included a zesty Zinfandel, a Merlot, a Marquette blend, a sweet Moscato and a Moscato Rosé. We also enjoyed a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Malbec.

Once again, I reminded to never lose one's sense of discovery.

During my recent birthday party, our family gifted me the opportunity to attend a writer's workshop located in Minneapolis. The workshop's focus is to be on discovering new and exciting ways to write about wine. I was flabbergasted! What a wonderful opportunity to learn from other writers, hear their stories, and, perhaps, even be enriched by a new friendship.

Never lose it -- the desire to learn new ideas.

You may have guessed I am an avid reader. I'm not a cozy book fan, but, rather, I enjoy historical fiction books with meaningful story lines of how people get through their good and bad times. From the writer's perspective, I like to discover how and where these fictional characters find strength, redemption, hope, love and grace.

I have noticed my current choice of authors is becoming more diverse, and I find their stories amazing. In spite of many of the writers hurtful experiences, they all seem to find the crack in the darkness that lets in the light.

Never lose your open mind to new and diverse views and stories.

Finally, and you had to know this was coming, never lose your sense of search for a new wine. I always tell people to look at a bottle of wine and ask it to tell you its story. Wouldn't that be awesome?

So, my friends, never lose it.

As always, eat and drink in moderation but laugh with reckless abandon.

Cheers!
