Back and forth

By Ron Skjong 3 min read

It's a befuddling time of the year.

've been around a number of years, and know what to expect during these months of the year. Here in the North Country, the temperatures flow from cold to hot in a matter of a few hours. The falling moisture greets us with snowflakes, ice crystals and rain drops. The weather cycles goes back and forth again and again.

It's even difficult to know if it's February or April.

Is it March or May?

Who knows?

Last Monday the temps were in the mid 80s, and, today a week later, it's in the low 40s.

Does one dress in shorts, a T-shirt and flip flops, or do you wear a heavy winter coat?

The weather gods haven't decided if it's actually Winter, Spring or Summer. Their moods go back and forth -- back and forth.

When a young lad, I enjoyed reading the western cowboy novels of Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour. I dreamed about the past western culture through these books.

Then, a few year later, the Cold War genre hit the book shelves, and I dug into the novels of John le Carré and Graham Greene. However, a western novel always crept back into my reading schedule irregardless if I was into historical novels, books with societal themes or religious texts. Back and forth…always, back and forth.

In case you don't know it, books and wine go well together. The book fulfills your need to enter a story and the wine satisfies your taste buds. It's like going back and forth between your mental and physical states of being.

Even my desire for wines have gone back and forth over the years. Initially, I fell in love with German Rieslings. Then the reds of California like their Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlot. Next, came my interest in Chardonnay which was followed by the reds like Tempranillo from Spain. Those fantastic reds were soon over taken by acidic whites like Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier.

Soon red blends entered the picture followed by such soft and entreating whites as a Chenin Blanc.

Do you see the alternating interest in wines I've gone through over the years?

It's kind of interesting, isn't it?

Oh! Here's another part of this confusing time of the year -- sports.

Is it basketball season or baseball season?

Do I focus on hockey, early football games or tennis?

Which sport is in season?

I flip through the channels from sport to sport and just chill out. It's overwhelming for this fellow so I'll just have a glass of wine. Oh cripes!

Do I have a red or white, dry or sweet, acidic or buttery?

I did it again -- going back and forth, etc..

I must tell myself to relax and enjoy the moment. After all, there are many steps left along my pathway of life so I can watch, sip, wear or read whatever I darn well want to.

Perhaps the best mindset is one of patience. Taste, read, wear and watch whatever you desire. Be happy you can go back and forth!

As always, eat and drink in moderation but laugh with reckless abandon!

Cheers!
