On the Porch

For this column, I often share social news or the gossip columns from the old newspapers. The social news is always fascinating to read and a lot can be learned of local people and events from the communities in Lyon County. For this article, I’m going to share the classifieds from one of the newspapers. The classifieds are interesting to read as well. Here are a few from the News-Messenger of Lyon County on July 29, 1921:

GRAIN HAULING – Large Auto Truck and driver for hauling grain, 45c per ton per mile. Also expressing and draying. Phone 529.

FOR SALE – 1919 Chevrolet, Bargain. Mrs. E. Maertens, Ghent.

FOR SALE – Residence with four acres of ground. Modern barn, room for four horses and six cows. Garage, big chicken coop and fruit orchard. Soft water well pays for itself. May take in small residence in town in trade. Call or phone 295, Richard De Meyer, 318 East Main St.

The photograph featured this week from the Lyon County Museum’s collection is 3rd Street in Marshall taken in the late 1920s. The Marshall State Bank (later was named Western State Bank) was located where The Gambler is today.
