On the Porch
The social news or gossip columns in the old newspapers are always fascinating to read. A special section in the newspaper was devoted to the social media of the day. The whereabouts of local people and events were often featured in these columns. Here are a few from The News Messenger of Lyon County on May 7, 1915:
Dr. C.E. Persons was in Tracy, Tuesday, in attendance at the Lyon County Medical Association.
On May 1st Steve Blanchette of the Marshall State Bank received from headquarters, the notice of appointment as Post Master for the City of Marshall, to succeed O.A. Krook, who has held the position for three years. The change was brought about in a quiet way by the political powers that rule, while there has been some guessing, but few knew the answer until Mr. Blanchette’s appointment was announced. Mr. Krook has been a very efficient Post Master and is satisfied with his term of office. Mr. Blanchette will take charge of the office the first of next week, after closing his connection with the bank. It is not likely that there will by any change made in the employees of the office.
W.C. Haney’s Drug Store is taking on an up-to-date appearance with new complete new fixtures being installed. The interior will be re-decorated, and with a new steel ceiling and front which will soon be added, will be the most cosmopolitan of our business houses. A new front will also be placed in the Post Office building.
Herman Anderson has recently sold his home on Fourth street to C.R. Weiler, who will take possession in a few weeks.
Seven autoes, filled with men of the G.A.R. and ladies of the W.R.C. went to Minneota this afternoon to present flags to the school at Minneota. A flag will be presented to each room with appropriate ceremony and a program will be given by the school children.
With the publishing of the Marshall High School Annual, the first of its kind to be issued, and printing a forty page brief, besides the regular lot of smaller printing and the publishing of this issue, The News-Messenger has been an exceptionally busy place the past week.
The photograph featured this week shows an image of the 1915 Marshall High School Annual from the Lyon County Museum’s collection. For a few years, the yearbook was titled the Selin before the name changed to Marhian.
