On the Porch
The social news or gossip columns in the old newspapers are always fascinating to read. A special section in the newspaper was devoted to the social media of the day. The whereabouts of local people and events were often featured in these columns. Here are a few from The News Messenger of Lyon County on March 17, 1922:
The city is taking the lead this week in the spring clean-up by cleaning the streets of the dust and dirt left after the thawing of the recent snow. The improvement is worthy of note and should serve as a good example to all citizens to go and do likewise just as soon as possible.
Miss Helen McLeod, Matron of the Marshall Rest Room, informs the News-Messenger that the largest crowd ever coming to the Rest Room in one day came on Bargain Day. Miss McLeod also states that upon counting the receipts in the collection box she found only sixty-five cents.
Just as an indication of the popularity of Marshall’s Bargain Day it may be noted that 85 passengers alighted from the Great Northern noon train Wednesday, practically all of them shoppers taking advantage of the special offerings by the members of the Marshall Business Men’s Association.
Andrew Berg spent Thursday in Marshall visiting Mr. and Mrs. P.J. Brantman. He came here from Sioux Falls and stopped off here on his way home to Minneota.
Mrs. Arthur Freese of Marshall will give a dress form demonstration at the home of Chas. H. Carlson on Tuesday afternoon, March 21. It is hoped that the ladies will turn out for this lesson in large numbers.
Miss Juanita Peffer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Peffer, and Mr. Vincent Sheffield, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Sheffield, were united in marriage at the home of the bride Tuesday forenoon at ten-thirty. Rev. R.B. Tibbetts of the M.E. church officiating. Mr. Kenneth Sheffield and Miss Birdie Keller were the attendants.
Gene Middleton celebrated his birthday, March ninth, by having a sleighing party for a number of his little friends, later going to the Middleton home and enjoying a nice supper served by his mother, and his brothers, Robert and Frank.
Mrs. John Shrader entertained the B.B. Bridge Club on Tuesday evening.
The photograph featured this week shows a wedding dress in the Lyon County Museum’s collection. This dress was worn by Della Nelson. Della was born in Canby to Martin and Louise (Torgerson) Nelson on Jan. 1, 1890. Della marred John Shrader on Feb. 14, 1918 in Yellow Medicine County. After their marriage, they moved to Marshall. John worked at the First National Bank.
