On the Porch
The social news or gossip columns in the old newspapers are always fascinating to read. A special section in the newspaper was devoted to the social media of the day. The whereabouts of local people and events were often featured in these columns. Here are a few from The News Messenger of Lyon County on December 6, 1921:
Mrs. Hugo Gieseke entertained the Junior Bridge Club at her home Tuesday evening.
Fire Chief Albert Volk reports that a Christmas present of $35.00 was presented last week by F.E. Carlisle to the Fire Department, in recognition of their services during the fire in which his place of business was in danger of being destroyed. Mr. Volk states that the gift will come in handy and can be put to good use.
Raymond McGandy is in a Minneapolis hospital suffering with an injury to his eye which it is feared may permanently impair his sight. While returning to his home at Olivia a few weeks ago after visiting his parents in this city, the lights of the car which he was driving went out and in trying to go on he drove into the back end of a wagon.
The schools are full of the Christmas spirit in way of music as Christmas approaches. On Friday evening of this week the School Lyceum will put on their heaviest number, the National Male Quartet. This promises to be a rare treat, for this is one of the finest male quartets in the country.
A Christmas program and basket social will be given at the Dudley town hall by school district No. 28, on Friday evening, December 16.
The boys and girls club of school district No. 50 will give a Christmas program Tuesday evening, December 20th.
Miss Verna Blanchette entertained the Okiya Camp Fire Girls at her home last Wednesday evening.
Manager Thorburn of the Barrymore Theatre announces in this issue that after January first, the price of children’s tickets will be ten cents.
The photograph featured this week from the Lyon County Museum’s collection is the Barrymore Theater in Marshall. The building was constructed in 1915. In 1922, the name changed to the State Theatre. The State Theatre was in operation until 1960. The building held many businesses on the main floor and second floor over the years, including dental offices on the second floor. Today, Thrifty White Pharmacy occupies the building.
The Lyon County Historical Society (LCHS) is a nonprofit, member-supported organization. LCHS operates the Lyon County Museum at 301 W Lyon St in Marshall. The Lyon County Museum is open to visitors.
