On the Porch
The social news or gossip columns in the old newspapers are always fascinating to read. A special section in the newspaper was devoted to the social media of the day. The whereabouts of local people and events were often featured in these columns. Here are a few from The News Messenger of Lyon County on June 26, 1914:
Fred Healy is spending a few days fishing with Al. Whittacre at Litchfield. A postal stated Fred was on the lake during the big wind Tuesday night, but he managed to get to shore safely.
The graduating exercises of the Marshall Hospital Training School will be held Wednesday evening, July 1st, in the Congregational church at eight o’clock.
George LaVoy of Chicago is visiting his brother Victor this week. George is a former Marshall boy and now a conductor with the Chicago Electric Ry. Co.
A number of men from this city attended the K.C. celebration at New Ulm Sunday. Rev. Jordan, Harry Regnier, Paul Gits, Albert Gits, W. Moore, Chris Rock, P.B. Menard are among those who were there.
Miss Marie Jurisdal of Cottonwood visited Miss Gladys Munroe between trains on Tuesday, attending Chautauqua in the evening.
Wm. Ed. Heagle sold his farm south of town this week, through Johnson & Engebretson, for $96.00 per acre.
Marshallites will have plenty of opportunity to fittingly observe the Fourth- Minneota, Milroy and Amiret all invite us to join them, but the crowd will no doubt follow the ball team to Minneota.
Addison & Son have installed a gasoline filler station in front of their store, similar to the one put in last week by the Marshall Auto Co., except that it combines an electric lighting display and drains the gas hose after using.
The photograph featured this week from the Lyon County Museum’s collection is a postcard photograph of the Addison block on the corner of West Main Street and East College Drive. The photograph was taken around 1914. The Addison Hardware store on the corner (currently Marshall Tobacco) was a Marshall business for many years.
