My T-shirt obsession

More than a year ago, it was mentioned that it seemed like I had about 1,000 T-shirts. It may seem like I have that many (I have a couple or so Rubbermaid tubs filled with just T-shirts to prove it), I don’t (hopefully) have that many.

But what can I say, T-shirts are comfortable to wear.

In many of the photos Ross and I post on Facebook, I tend to be wearing a T-shirt of some sort, whether it’s one of my several Minnesota-themed shirts, a Renaissance Festival shirt or one I ordered from Amazon because it was just too funny to pass up.

How my T-shirt buying habit started, I honestly don’t know. It probably began with the Ren Fest and collecting T-shirts from the summer musicals the Marshall Area Stage Company has produced. On my first trip to the Renaissance Festival back in 1996, I bought the festival T-shirt. And I made it a point to get the “poster” T-shirt every time I visited. That ended up being a lot of T-shirts, some of which I am yet to wear. This year, I decided to give up that particular tradition, especially when I’m finding myself with an abundance of T-shirts and well, the design is kind of the same from year to year. It felt liberating to say the least.

Lately I’ve been looking at funny workout shirts or humor T-shirts in general. I have one that’s “Animals of the World” where a manta ray is referred to as a “sea flap flap” or a raccoon is called a “trash panda.” A rabbit is a “boople snoot” on this shirt. You can find darned near anything on Amazon, and this is one of those things. I also own a workout shirt that says “Burpees hate you too” from Amazon as well. I also have a shirt that says “I Run Like the Winded,” which is true.

I also have several T-shirts of my favorite internet cat Pusheen. Keep me away from a Hot Topic.

Minnesota has become my adopted home state, and I can now say that I’ve lived here longer than I have in Wisconsin. So I’ve bought quite a few Minnesota T-shirts. I have one that says “Minnesota Nice” where the “Nice” is in the shape of Minnesota. I also have one I got at the Target in Sioux Falls that says “Minne-sorta Nice.” There’s the ones that have “Home” with the shape of Minnesota as the “o.” There’s ones with items that represent Minnesota like a loon or a fish. Then there’s my state park “swag” T-shirts from Camden, Itasca State Park, Rice Lake State Park and Whitewater State Park.

I admit that I don’t wear a good chunk of my T-shirts anymore. Many seem to be permanently housed in the tubs, probably wondering if they’ll ever see the light of day again. Why do I hang on to them? Sentimental reasons maybe? There’s always turning some of them into a quilt, but I don’t know….
