To the editor: This past September, I lost my mother to Alzheimer’s disease. It was a heart-wrenching experience that I know far too many families across Minnesota and the country are familiar with. Alzheimer’s is a relentless, degenerative disease that affects not only those who are diagnosed but also their families and loved ones. Thanks to Marshall for showing respect

To the editor: Last week I attended the funeral of my great nephew in the town of Marshall. As we left the church and had our funeral procession through town to the cemetery, our hearts were lifted in gratitude at all the cars who pulled off and stopped on the roadside while we passed by. Those people didn’t know how our hearts ached or who the funeral procession was for. But the respect that they showed in their actions lifted our hearts up. A sign of respect

To the editor: Last Saturday our family was in a funeral motorcade on the way to bury our grandson, James Richard Stage, the son of Emily and Dallas Stage from Vista, who died 10 minutes after birth on 3-28-25. As the motorcade passed through the town of Marshall, it gave us some added peace as the oncoming traffic stopped for our grandson. Thank you who ever you were. Now you know who was in the casket. What makes America great?

To the editor: The World Book Dictionary” lists thirteen possible definitions for the word “great”. The adjective can describe size, quantity, importance, or relationship to another person. “Great” is also used to describe quality as in the hyphenated word, “great-hearted”. Do we want our country to be considered great because of its wealth and power or for its “noble, generous, brave, fearless” people? Which news stories warm our hearts the most? A report of how the stock market is doing or a daring rescue that saved a person or animal’s life? A ...

Public education is not the enemy

To the editor: Those on the stage in the White House these days seem to think they can make things up to push their agenda. As a former public school student and teacher I am compelled to correct some of the blatant disinformation. The Department of Education does not choose your kids curriculum, write text books, invent common core, or control what your school teaches. Those things are determined through state and local control. Trump’s executive order to abolish the Department of Education walks away from students, schools and communities.
