My 84 year old mother is upset because her Medicare Part D prescription drug insurance premium is going up nearly 80% next year. This year it's $101/month. Next year it will be $179/month. In 2025, it was $50/month. The reason? Government subsidies have been scaled back and insurers are choosing to pass on these costs.
My mom is on a very fixed income. Since they retired, my parents never paid taxes. For reference, the threshold for a couple to avoid paying taxes on Social Security is $32,000 a year or less. Dropping the insurance coverage is not an option. List price for 1 of her medications is $90/month. For another, it's $600/month. She needs both to survive.
The "Big, Beautiful Bill" capped the tax rate at 37% for people earning $626,350 or more per year. Previously they were taxed at 39.6%. For someone making $626,350, that 2.9% means they paid $16,285 less in taxes after the "Big Beautiful Bill" passed. In 2025, Elon Musk made $158 billion. That 2.9% tax cut means he pays $4.108 billion less in taxes. In 2025, Donald Trump made $2.2 billion. That 2.9% tax cut saved him $57.2 million in taxes.
The cost of the Iran War is now $45.1 billion. The rich don't want to fund it through their tax dollars. Instead, they're squeezing it out of the poor, the working class, and the elderly.
If you think that passing this legislation was in your best interests, reelect the people that voted for it. If you think this is unjust and immoral, vote for someone else.
