As we go to the polls on Nov 3, we should assess the candidates we vote for and, party aside, consider whether they share our values. Remember one of many values John F. Kennedy stood for: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what can you do for your country."
The most basic value we expect from our officeholders is public service. Not self-service. Our President is taking from our country for himself. His tariff policies have hit farmers hard, destroying a marketplace that took years to build and escalating the price of farmers' input costs which cripples the average consumer.
His reckless approach toward Iran is costing over $2.2 trillion. His repeated threats to the government of Iran and to annihilate its people violates the sanctity of human life. He has bullied Republican legislators threatening if they don't support his policies, they will suffer consequences in the election. Most concerning are his attacks on immigrants. His reckless approach with ICE demonstrates little to no value for human life.
Our congresswoman, Michelle Fishbach, says she is pro-life. My Catholic faith says all human life is important. I have not seen her stand up against the President's many actions of disrespect for human life.
I'm voting for Erik Osberg for Congress who is committed to valuing people's lives. That includes making health care accessible and affordable, and farm policies that give beginning farmers a chance. He is not taking PAC money.
I also support Keith Ellison for attorney general. He has stood with farmers consistently on ag issues like the Right to Repair. With every hospital merger, Keith's priority has protected our health interests.
Please, take time before Nov. 3 to discern your candidate's values.
