Republicans have few real issues to campaign on. They tend to run on bogus issues to energize their base. Consider some of them.
Transgender people arguably suffer from more discrimination than any other group. More than 500,000 athletes compete in NCAA college sports; fewer than 10 are transgender. The eligibility of a few aspiring athletes is not a burning national issue. With only a handful of cases nationwide, deciding whether to allow a transgender athlete to compete is a local issue which can be decided by a team or a league without the intrusion of big government.
The number of non-citizens who try to vote in U.S. elections is negligible, as supported overwhelmingly by independent research. Trump's former lawyer, Ty Cobb, said, "This is a problem that does not exist." Cobb noted that the Heritage Foundation, Trump's favorite think tank, found 77 examples of possible non-citizen voting over 25 years, about 6 potential cases per election among more than 100 million voters. Cobb fears that Trump may cite dubious claims of non-citizen voting to illegally send troops or ICE agents to polling places on election day. We don't need federal agents to protect the polls from a hypothetical handful of frightened non-citizens.
Sharia describes principles for living a good life according to Islam. There are many versions depending on the country, the Islamic sect, or even personal philosophy. America has allies and adversaries with Muslim leaders. However, there is no chance that friend or foe will impose Sharia law in America. The Establishment Clause of the Constitution bans establishment of Sharia law. About 1.3% of Americans are Muslim, and most do not favor imposing Sharia law. Hence, more than 99% of Americans oppose Sharia based laws. Muslims in America will always be subject to American laws regardless of what version of Sharia they follow.
We should not allow our votes to be influenced by bogus issues. We should vote on real issues like health care, public education, and strengthening rural economies, which are major campaign planks for Democrats like Congressional candidate Erik Osberg.
