Remembering our heritage

Dear editor:

It’s easy to forget the actual birth dates this month of Lincoln (12th) and George Washington (22nd), since President’s Day became law in February of 1971. As the decades have passed, the wisdom and truth of the Founding Fathers has mostly been forgotten or claimed to be obsolete two centuries later. Washington, also known as the Father of our country, shared many simple reminders of the Republic that was set up and how to maintain limited government. In a letter to Major-General Robert Howe, dated August 17, 1779, Washington penned, “Few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder. ” That sentence and warning is hardly outdated. ” During his First Inaugural Address in April of1789, he stated, “No People can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand, which conducts the Affairs of men more than the People of the United States. Every step, by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation, seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency. ” How have we done in mocking religion since his comments? Is there not a conspicuous sad result before our eyes, due to short-sighted thinking about what we owe to God, from the spiritual part of our being? Go to mount vernon.org, for many more pertinent quotes from Washington.
