School district would have option to renew levy
To the editor:
Are we, as Marshall Public Schools taxpayers, being asked to give our local district an “open checkbook” for the possibility of the next 20 years?
I have recently asked, and received numerous information that I requested from our local district. All of the information that I’ve received is public information and can be obtained by anyone.
With the upcoming levy referendum that the school is proposing they are asking the voters to approve this levy for a period of 10 years. During those years, the rate of inflation can be applied each year and added to the original ask of two million dollars. Thus, increasing the two million every year. What is also included but I don’t believe on the ballot question is the authority of our local school board to renew or extend these two million dollars plus per year up to 10 additional years. Thus, possibility giving them an open checkbook and a possible increase of our real estate taxes for up to 20 years.
Here is a copy of a response I received from Sarah Kirchner, Director of Finance for MPS.
“You are correct in that the school board has the authority to renew an operating levy for up to another 10 years after the first 10-year term. The school board can also choose to end an operating levy during the levy certification process each year. This information is shared with the public at the annual truth in taxation meeting which is held during the first school board meeting in December or no later than December 31st.”
Now keep in mind according to this statement, the local school board can choose to end this operating levy each year. But my question would be, “what would make a significant difference for our local district to cancel or end this levy?” Oh, there is a chance that the state or federal government could come to their senses and give our local schools the money they need to operate. Anyone care to predict this happening?
Please keep this in mind when you cast your ballot, either before or in November. This levy if passed will increase our taxes. In addition, there is a possibly of increased taxes from the city, county and also the school’s general tax dollars.
Something for you to consider. If this levy ask is approved for the original 10 years, and then possibly extended for another 10 years, that today’s kindergarten class could be or might be graduating from college.
