Creating stories to achieve our ends

To the editor:

One of my acquaintances recently commented that the main reason that many are convinced that the last election was stolen is simply the fact that the MAGA cult was so much more visible than their opposition. They had boat parades, they waved flags at overpasses, they initiated truck convoys, and generally were much more boisterous about their beliefs.

It was simply inconceivable that they had fewer votes. Throw in a few outlandish conspiracy theories about ballots being thrown out and voting machines controlled by other countries, and you’ve created a nonsense conclusion that hundreds of lost court cases can’t even refute.

Just a short time ago, the VP candidate Vance openly confirmed what most thinking people already knew, “If we have to create stories in order to achieve our ends , we will.”

I am seeing much more clearly now what the British poet William Blake meant when he asked “Does a firm persuasion that a thing is so make it so?” The speed with which stupid rumors can be spread and absorbed by people who only seek to verify preconceived notions causes me to say…”please stop and take a look.”
