Immigration softens economic blow

To the editor:

No one wants to work? My retired friends and I don’t want to work either. We don’t want to see inflation, Social Security benefits cut, or the retirement age raised.

The fertility rate in the United States is 1.664, which is far below the level of population replacement level of 2.1, and it is dropping. Even now, there are less of workers entering the job market than retire. There are more job openings then people to fill them. United States needs an influx of young workers to mitigate our losses for the foreseeable future. Immigration softens the economic blow to our economy by filling jobs with new taxpayers. They help pay taxes and provide services when we in our 40s 50s and 60s retire. They are literally our Social Security. Let’s start treating them with the respect and appreciation they deserve.
