Biden unites, Trump divides

To the editor:

The contrast between the two leading Presidential candidates was on full display during their recent visits to the southern border. In his speech, President Biden described H.R. 2, the recently blocked border security bill. He invited former President Trump to join him in a bipartisan effort to enhance border security by backing H.R. 2.

Republican Sen. (James) Lankford, a border hawk, was largely responsible for crafting H.R. 2. The bill was initially supported by the border patrol union and by the Republican leadership in the Senate until Trump ordered Republicans to vote against it. Instead of working to fix border security, Trump wants to prolong border problems so that he can use immigration as a campaign issue.

Sen. Lankford felt betrayed. As quarterback for the bill, he said that he had been sacked by his own offensive line, by which he meant Republican members of Congress who would run interference for H.R. 2 in a normal political climate.

In his border speech, Trump praised Republican governors and blamed ‘Crooked Joe’ and Governor ‘Newscum’ for immigrant crime. (Incidentally, immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than American citizens.) Trump wants to tear us apart.

In contrast, Biden proclaimed, “We’re the United States of America. There’s nothing beyond our capacity when we work together.” Biden wants to bring the country together.
