Democrats are here to stay

To the editor:

It was gratifying to experience such a positive response to our DFL contingent at the SMSU Homecoming Parade. Clearly, people see and appreciate what Democrats (known as the DFL in Minnesota) get done. Nationally and in our state, Democrats are creating, funding, and supporting so many things that improve life for all of us in Lyon County and rural Minnesota.

In the past year, the DFL-controlled state legislature provided more funding for education, strengthened voting rights, expanded access to Minnesota Care health insurance, protected reproductive freedom, and increased funding for nursing homes. Minnesota Democrats also created paid family and medical leave, allocated additional funds for affordable housing, and provided free school lunches so that no kid goes hungry at school.

At the national level, Democrats are getting things done despite the inability of the Republicans to elect, much less retain, a Speaker of the House. One example is the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that provides Minnesota with billions of dollars to improve its roads and bridges, expand rural broadband internet access, and provide cleaner drinking water by replacing lead pipes.

People are grateful that Democrats are solving problems and getting things done, and they are increasingly expressive of their appreciation. As we walked the parade route, we were mostly met with encouraging cheers, claps, and thumbs-up signs.

So in response to the man who asked, "Do you ever get the sense that you're not wanted?" The answer is: No, not at all. We are here to stay.
