To the editor:
I have some deep concerns about the information that just came out of the governor's office regarding the recently enacted law "Driver's License for All." Reading through the propaganda sheet, I couldn't find out who is paying for the illegal immigrant's fees. How will they be able to read the highway signs since some speak and read only Spanish, Hmong, Somalian, etc.? Yes, and, at whose expense will they have an interpreter to study and pass the written test?
Secondly, but very importantly, how will the unleashing of these English-illiterate drivers onto our streets and highways affect our car insurance rates? My insurance agent say no one has broached the subject to him.
It was my first concern, because when I moved from Iowa to Memphis, Tennessee, my car insurance doubled. I asked my agent why, since I had not so much as a parking ticket, let alone a moving violation. I was politely told that auto insurance at that time was not required by law in Tennessee. However, 60% of the population was of an ethnic group, and of that 60%, half were illiterate and could not read signs. Yet, they had driver's licenses. So, the rest of us picked up the tab. I see this same situation playing out here. Yes, it is a law in Minnesota that one must have auto insurance, but very often, in the newspaper, there are citations issued for "no proof of insurance.
I have written to my state senator and House representative to address this issue for all of us, but as of yet, received no reply.
