Immigration is a rich and important part of American history. However, the current debacle at our southern border must never be confused with legal immigration. Jim Muchlinkski in his Sept. 3 opinion piece for the Independent seems to be supporting illegal immigration.
America is, and has always been, a nation of laws. Without secure borders and immigration rules that are vigilantly enforced, the security of America and American citizens are at immediate risk. 9/11 made that crystal clear to all Americans. The current scourge of Fentanyl and other illicit drugs killing Americans in incredible numbers is a direct result of an open southern border policy created and encouraged by President Biden immediately upon his taking office in January of 2021. It is hard to understand Biden's thinking, as his primary responsibility as our president should be the safety and security of America and American citizens.
Like Mr. Muchlinski, I also would favor a modern type of Ellis Island point of entry for processing legal immigrants to America. Visiting the original Ellis Island is an incredibly uplifting experience for anyone interested in American history. Ellis Island was not only used for processing, screening, and welcoming potential immigrants. It was also very involved in educating immigrants of their personal responsibilities if given the legal gift of entry to America.
