Here’s a motto to live by

To the editor:

After many years of reading the works of Ms. Madetzke in the Opinions section of your paper, I feel compelled to write a response to her most recent hateful comments of last week.

In this current age of hate-speak found in all corners of the world, it amazes me that the Independent continues to take the position of continuing to give air time to such hateful rhetoric. This country is literally at the crossroads of a civil war and I believe continuing to publish such opinions is like pouring grease on a kitchen fire.

As with all of the works written by Ms. Madetzke, the latest is pretty much laced with various Bible quotes meant to point fingers and shame those who are part of the LGBTQ community. One could find all sorts of Bible verses to get a point across — I remember one something to the effect of “do not judge others lest ye be judged”. I think of more people followed this way of thinking, we would all much be better off.

As a member of the LGBTQ community, I can attest to the hate and bullying that we must face daily, in particular that which I faced personally during the 34 years that I spent in the Marshall/Lyon County area. During this holiday season, I am reminded of something that my mother always used to say — “Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.” Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone could live by that motto?
