Students need our help

To the Editor:

As a Marshall City Council Member and as a parent of three Marshall students, I know how important strong schools are to the well-being of our local communities. That is why the upcoming school referendum is such an important decision for students and community members alike.

The district faces a $2 million deficit for the next school year because state funding has lagged behind inflation for over two decades, and one-time COVID relief funds have nearly run out. Without additional revenue, the only way the district will be able to balance its budget is through cuts that could very well jeopardize staff, class sizes and services for our students.

This November, Marshall Public School voters will consider whether to reinstate a $675 per pupil operating levy. If approved, the levy would generate $1.8 million annually that would help stabilize finances and protect services for students. These funds would go directly to the districts general fund, which pays for essential classroom materials, support staffing, specialized services and educational programming.

I realize that this is a decision that makes people think — more costs/taxes; however education is truly an investment in our future — our children deserve the best education that we can provide and that is best achieved with small class sizes, support materials that augment the work of the teachers and staff. Great education is one of the building blocks of great community. Marshall is a great community and we don’t want to fall behind.

I would encourage Marshall residents to visit TomorrowsTigers.org to learn more about the plan to support our schools. Early voting continues through Nov. 7, and Election Day is Nove. 8. Make your voice heard and vote.
