Election season is here

To the editor:

We’ve “graduated” in a sense in our elections in this city, state, and nation to a more reasonable set of rules. I’ve noticed that we still love to mark the countdown to “Election Day” but really it’s just time to adjust to an “Election Season.” In our state, the earliest of any state in the nation, in-person-early-voting and voting-by-mail began September 23rd! It concludes November 8th (the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November). Mailed ballots must be sent back and received by that day to be counted.

Isn’t it time we all make that adjustment in our thinking? Candidate forums, information sessions, published (print or televised) candidate Q&As should acknowledge this change and adjust their operations accordingly.

Every election is a chance to engage and renew and some of us need a refresher on our civic duties. Citizens should vote. If you’re eligible you should vote. With so much technology at our fingertips it’s easy to research and learn about the candidates and to tune in to forums and information sessions on your schedule. They are all recorded and accessible. This election season please do your part to become an informed voter. It’s probably easier than you think. It’s our civic duty.
