Bring drivers educationto classes

To the editor:

With widespread discussion of worker shortages, it may be worth taking another look at one of the recent changes in Marshall’s community. For years, driver education classes were offered through the high school, providing students with a chance to get the training they need to become licensed drivers as part of the curriculum. It is now offered through Marshall Community Services, at a significantly higher cost to the learner. Most Minnesotans can earn their license for around $70, but the course in Marshall costs $335. This price can place a license well out of the price range for many young people, especially since many do not yet have jobs.

And that is why I ask that we consider bringing the classes back into the classroom. We have all heard people claim that “nobody wants to work anymore,” but we may well reach a point in which fewer people can work. It can be difficult to get to work on time in winter even for people with reliable transportation. Without it, it can be almost impossible to seek or maintain a job.

In addition to the cost, the classes are currently in a place which requires students to find a ride. By returning to the high school, we would consolidate their learning in a location which students already frequent. And if they have questions, they would be able to speak with their instructors during the school day.

I truly think this is an important idea for the Marshall community. As we go to the polls to vote for the school board, I hope that our candidates will consider the good that we need done.
