To the editor:
Communication is vital to understanding truths and promoting good relationships. What is the role of a school board? What are the responsibilites of a school board in a school district?
The article headlined, "MPS to hold public info session for school board candidates", states these questions will be addressed on July 27, as suggested by a school board consultant. According to the article, "The focus of the Marshall School Board is governance instead of management of the school district."
"Governance" is defined as a noun meaning "government; exercise of authority,; direction; control; management."
"Management" is also a noun, defined as "The act of manner, or practice, handling, supervision or control."
Many parents are desiring that our public schools simply teach academic subjects, supporting all learners without reference to genders; teachers, respecting all beliefs by not stating their particular belief or promoting a particular belief in their classrooms with flags or other materials and teaching history as a series of events, speaking of historical figures as individual personalities rather than tying them to a race.
If it is the role of a public school board to exercise their authority to see that is done, all learners will feel equally supported, and the mission statement of our Marshall Public Schools will be upheld, too.
