Trudy Madetzke's latest pearl-clutching lamentation to the editor on June 22 takes aim at Marshall's mayor for -- I kid you not -- welcoming people at the city's recent Pride event. In the arrogant and self-righteous manner that has become her signature style on this page, through the guise of a vague reference to "a higher Law," Madetzke regards a particular interpretation of Christianity as applicable to everyone.
I have no objection to Madetzke adhering to this particular interpretation of Christianity herself. I do, however, object to her apparent desire to subject everyone else to it. Her concern "is whether our city will continue to allow activities to be held which support actions contrary to 'a higher Law,' even though they have been ruled acceptable by our government."
I don't know about you, but I don't want to live in a theocracy, and I certainly don't want to live in hers.
I don't know how far Madetzke would go to impose her convictions on the rest of us, but I find it disturbing that she approvingly recounts an incident in the 1970s in which her police officer husband appealed to "a higher Law" to intimidate some teenagers who were not breaking the law but were engaged in amorous activity that he disapproved of.
Instead of concerning herself with others' sexual orientation and gender, I suggest Madetzke take the advice of St. Paul in Philippians 2:12 and work out her own salvation in fear and trembling.
