Column on Rittenhouse lacks honesty

To the editor:

“Kyle Rittenhouse is now due another sort of justice” is the headline of a syndicated columnist’s article in the Independent. (11/30/21)

When everything that has been said about the Rittenhouse case, whether he had good intentions or not, one false statement was repeated by the columnist: ” The law said he was legally allowed to carry the rifle he had that night.” It was the court who stated that; not Wisconsin gun laws.

Every site listing Wisconsin gun laws state the same requirements. A rifle can be carried by a person under 18 if he/she is going hunting. If it is openly carried, it must be upright against the shoulder, with the barrel pointed backward. Do either of these statements apply to Rittenhouse?

Why deny the truth?

It is equally sad to read that Kyle was a racist or a white supremist. Distrust, Anger, Greed and seeking Power are traits that are destroying our country.

In the ’50s, there was relief that a vaccine was found to prevent polio. Today a vaccine for COVID has become intertwined with political beliefs. A telephone is a source for scams. Still, we cling to the words, “with liberty and justice for all’. It would have been the honest course to take, to charge Kyle with illegally carrying the gun he did that night in Kenosha.

A little honesty goes a long way in preserving trust in justice for all.
