S.1 goes against the Constitution

To the editor:

There is a piece of legalization before the US Senate known as S.1. It has been labeled, “For The People Act”.

This bill is being promoted on Facebook and it saddens me to see how many people give it a thumbs up. The bill is promoted as a voting rights bill.

I take some of this from Decision magazine May 2021. “H.R.1, (The House version of the bill), would require citizens being considered for service on “independent redistricting commissions” — a job now done by elected state legislatures — to disclose “involvement with, or financial support of, professional, social, political, religious or community organizations or causes.”

My question, if it is an independent commission, why do they need to know if you support the Lions Club or a pro-choice or pro-life organization or what church you go to?

As far as the religious question this is totally against the Constitution of the United States. Read for yourself Article VI of the Constitution, “but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”

The House of Representatives passed H.R. 1 on March 3 with no Republican support and only one Democrat opposing it. There are a number of other things in this 800 page bill that go against the Constitution.
