Time for transparency

To the editor:

In 2018, Dave Hughes was endorsed by President Trump, to run against U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson-D, for Minnesota Congressional District 7 (CD7). In that year’s election, Mr. Hughes came the closest to beating Peterson than any Republican had done in many years.

This year, Mr. Hughes is running again, but information was sent out to all Republicans in CD7, shortly before the Republican Caucuses, encouraging the recipients to support Trump-endorsed Michelle Fischbach, as the challenger to Rep. Peterson.

That led me to converse with Mr. Hughes by phone and during our nearly two-hour conversation, he mentioned a few of the incidents that took place, allowing Michelle to be given the nod by the Republican Party.

Last summer Mr. Hughes’ campaign received a phone call from the 2018 National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Leadership, inviting him to a meeting, but first he had to answer two questions, and he answered “no” to one, asking him if he would support U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy-R, to become Speaker of the U.S. House, if the Republicans took control in 2020. Hughes did not agree to that and he never heard from the NRCC again.

Are Republicans automatically supporting Fischbach, to remain in the good graces of the back room dealing Republican leadership? If David Hughes was not on the ballot, I would support Peterson, rather than indirectly permitting such underhanded tactics to continue.
