We need change

To the editor:

I was intrigued by the local response to the mask order as reported on July 23 (“Gov. Walz issues statewide mask order”). While Officer Jim Marshall responded with common sense by stating that local law enforcement would continue their emphasis on education as opposed to strict enforcement, our Republican legislators immediately began to wring their hands and bring up singular scenarios in which the donning of a mask might be inconvenient.

Senator Dahms and Representative Swedzinski mentioned that business owners were “filling up their in boxes” and were confused by the order and couldn’t access help. To the contrary, I believe that our local business community has been resourceful, flexible, and, almost without exception, concerned about the health and safety of their employees and customers. I applaud them for that.

In the absence of a federal response to the pandemic, Gov. Walz has taken on the responsibility and made the necessary effort to keep Minnesotans safe. He has listened to medical professionals and expert scientists and followed their advice. He deserves credit for that. In contrast, our local legislators have done little outside of making excuses and blaming others.

We need a change. Doria Drost will work to develop and enact policies that will improve the lives of all her constituents. Vote for Doria for MN House District 16A.
