Live, speak according to God’s guidelines

To the editor:

The first definition given for “faith” in the World Book Dictionary, is “a believing without proof; trust.” Synonyms are “confidence, reliance.”

An Independent reader recently objected to Christian beliefs being expressed on the opinion page in an article headed, “Move Christian conservative opinion writer to the faith page.” (May 2)

Who or what a person trusts, loves or believes makes up one’s faith. Some GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) guidelines were stated in the article. It would seem reasonable to expect that another person’s or group’s guide lines would be entitled to be expressed on the opinion page, too.

There are those who trust God’s guidelines for living, as the psalmist wrote, “I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free.” (Psalm 119:32 and verses following.)

When we reference God’s Word, we find God created a perfect world that became marred by human desires to be like God. But God did not abandon His human beings. He sent His Son, to rescue us. Jesus took our deserved punishment of death, absorbing all our sins, and then showed His power over death by coming back to life to assure us we, too, will live again with Him in a perfect, heavenly home.

“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” (John 3:17)

If our elected officials and all of us would try to live and speak according to God’s guidelines, instead of our reasoning and desires, our world would be a much more pleasant place.

The opinion page presents an equal opportunity for everyone to express their thoughts, with the responsibility to do so respectfully. May it continue with that purpose.
