A volleyball season for the ages

One Independent editorial writer referred to the Marshall Tigers as the New York Yankees of Minnesota high school volleyball.

The New York Yankees recorded 27 World Series titles. Meanwhile, Marshall recorded its eighth title on Saturday night in St. Paul. A feat maybe more aligned with the New England Patriots’ six Super Bowl wins. No matter the comparison — Marshall’s eight titles that includes the recent back-to-back championships — is a remarkable feat. Remember, because earlier matches dragged out for hours on Saturday, the Tigers had to wait until 9 p.m. to play their title bout against Benilde-St. Margaret.

Credit goes out to the players and the coaches for not letting the long wait get in the way of their championship quest.

Meanwhile, Minneota volleyball was making its own history on Saturday. The Vikings displayed perseverance and true grit to grind out a five-set win over Mayer Lutheran. That win allowed the Vikings to not only celebrate a state championship, but revel in sweet revenge against the team that defeated them last year in the title match.

While congratulating both teams for their 2022 accomplishments, we also honor the Tigers and Vikings for showing the utmost class all season long.

We also thank them for providing fans with exciting volleyball throughout the season.
