Building relationships at National Night Out
Law enforcement agencies in communities across the nation held National Night Out events Tuesday night. It was good to see the large turnout at Independence Park in Marshall.
Thursday’s Independent front-page photo showcased the positive impact National Night Out can have on residents young and old. The photo showed a smiling Marshall police officer watching over a boy pedaling a four-wheel bicycle with a steering wheel through an obstacle course. The boy was wearing goggles that simulate the experience of driving while impaired.
Many residents, young and old, only experience interactions with law enforcement during traffic stops and tragedies. Tuesday’s event offered the opportunity to build relationships between those who serve in law enforcement and residents. It also offers educational opportunities, which was demonstrated Tuesday night. Besides the impaired driving experience, residents peeked inside police and ambulance vehicles. They also watched drone flights and demonstrations by the Marshall Fire Department.
A large crowd watched firefighters use special tools in a demonstration of how they rescue victims from a crashed vehicle.
All these demonstrations were impressive and will leave long-lasting impressions on not only the young people, but also the adults in attendance.
