Short Takes

Connecting ag with students

THUMBS UP:

With our farmers in southwest Minnesota driving their combines from sunrise to sunset during this harvesting season, there is no better time for Gov. Tim Walz proclaiming October as Minnesota Farm to School month. According state of Minnesota press release, Farm to School programs create connections between schools and farmers. Through these relationships, schools can provide fresh food to students, as well as educational opportunities for nutrition and wellness and hands-on learning experiences with school gardens. It’s vital in this region to keep this connection strong.

Road deaths ‘alarming’

THUMBS DOWN:

A press release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety provided a grim picture what is going on right now on our roads and highways. The release reported that six people lost their lives in vehicle accidents last weekend. The fatalities involved two motorcyclists and one pedestrian. Alcohol was a factor in three of the accidents and one fatality involved an unbelted motorist. Even after all the past tragedies and reminders from our law enforcement officials, motorists are still throwing caution into the wind by driving impaired or without wearing a seat belt. Also according to the release, preliminary reports show 285 people have lost their lives on Minnesota roads so far in 2020, compared to 263 this time last year. The number of people dying on our roads is alarming and gets scarier each day,” Office of Traffic Director Mike Hanson said. “While the statistics help us understand what is happening on our roads, each of those losses is a mother, father, brother, sister, son or daughter. The choices you make could change the life of the person next to you on the road and the people they are important to.”

A debate tough to watch

THUMBS DOWN:

Who won the first presidential debate? That was the question we posed to readers on the Marshallindepedent.com website. As of mid-day Thursday, the voting was split 50/50. We interpret those results that viewers were unhappy with the behavior of both candidates in Tuesday night’s debate. Undecided voters looking for answers to some of their questions are probably more confused than ever. We can only hope the next debate will follow a more civil structure.
