Short Takes

Heartbreaking, but correct decision

THUMBS UP:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said it was a heartbreaking decision when he announced the closure of schools for the remainder of the school year. He apologized to the students who will miss out on graduations, tournaments and end of year celebrations. And it’s much more – memories of spending time with friends are lost. But with just a few weeks left on the schedule, and the virus still raging, it was the right decision. So parents, students and teachers will end the school year with distance learning. That process has been challenging for teachers and students, as well for parents. But at least we know everybody will remain safe.

Missing the good old days

THUMBS DOWN:

On Thursday’s front page of the Independent, the Ogden Newspapers reporting team put the spotlight on how the shutdown has affected small businesses. The article profiled the Rainbow Saloon in Roy, Utah. The owner of that business was quoted as saying “I’ve cried every single solitary day” since she closed her doors to the public. While the Rainbow Saloon is located in Utah, every business in Marshall and surrounding communities can relate to that owner’s feelings these days. We all miss the personal connections that we have always enjoyed, and maybe at times took for granted.

More towers means more service

THUMBS UP:

Woodstock Communications’ project to expand internet service in Lyon County is good news for our rural region. And it couldn’t come at better time, as more and more people are forced to work from home because of the COVID-19 pandemic. And depending on where you live in the county, internet can be a frustrating proposition. A Woodstock official attended this week’s meeting of the Lyon County board of commissioners to give a presentation on hopefully eliminate most of that frustration. The official told commissioners that Woodstock will increase the number of towers in the county. And that’s why it’s good news.
