Short Takes for Sept. 6

A problem that needs a solution

THUMBS DOWN:

It’s too bad there isn’t a better solution for the curbside recycling in Lyon County. On Tuesday the Lyon County commissioners, facing a huge increase in the recycling contract, voted to end curbside pickup. Residents will have to cart their own recyclables to a drop site. This is a nationwide problem, which needs a solution so that recyclables don’t end up in the landfill.

Gun control legislation

SIDEWAYS THUMB:

Prospects for a solution for another nationwide problem — mass shootings — are uncertain. Maybe President Donald Trump and the Senate will finally agree to some kind of gun control legislation, whether it is increased background checks or the renewing of the ban on assault rifles, some kind of action is sorely needed.

Small town festivals full of fun

THUMBS UP:

They may be small towns, but their celebrations are packed full of fun for people of all ages. Tracy Boxcar Days last weekend was a success and the upcoming Minneota Boxelder Bug Days festival should be as well. A variety of activities from the educational, to musical offerings, to just plain silliness (adult water fights? bug races?) will keep everyone busy and happy.
