Short Takes

Like it or not, J-turn is ready to go

THUMBS UP:

Not everybody is crazy about J-turns on highways. But at least the J-turn construction project on Highway 23 at Lyon County Road 7 is finally complete and life can get back to normal for motorists who travel daily through that intersection. The new J-turn follows the construction of two others at the intersections of Saratoga Street and Lyon Street.

Ag markets may return

THUMBS DOWN:

The exchange between U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and a southwest Minnesota farmer during a forum held at the Farmfest Wednesday illustrates that the patience may be starting to wear thin among farmers over President Donald Trump’s tariff war with China. Perdue told the forum audience that “the markets will come back.” Well, time will tell if that claim is true. But if those markets do come back, it may take years to return to normal.

What about ‘red flag’ law?

THUMBS SIDEWAYS:

During a media interview at Farmfest, Gov. Tim Walz suggested the Minnesota Legislature consider passing “red flag” gun laws and common-sense gun registration laws already implemented in Florida and Arizona. A “red flag” law is a gun violence law that permits police or family to petition the state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who may present a danger to others or themselves. Something to think about.

Don’t miss the county fair
