City scores on basketball court award

THUMBS UP:

Marshall Council member Steven Meister is right — the news that construction will begin this summer on a special basketball court in Marshall is “fantastic.” The project to refurbish the basketball court at Independence Park is happening because of the “Our Courts. Our Future.” award by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Marshall Parks Superintendent Preston Stensrud told the City Council that Marshall’s application survived a nomination and voting process. The deal is fantastic because the project that will benefit youth will have no financial impact on the city.

Motorists in Canby face detours

THUMBS DOWN:

It’s going to be a rough summer for motorists in Canby. Already dealing with a street reconstruction project, motorists will have to navigate through and around Minnesota Department of Transportation highway projects. They involve replacing a bridge and repaving sections of Highway 68 and 75. The good news is once these projects are finished, it will be smooth driving.

Pre-kindergarten a good investment

THUMBS UP:

We have to disagree with critical comments directed toward Gov. Walz’s push for expanded funding for pre-kindergarten. This is a common sense approach to heading off student issues in later grades. It’s an investment that will pay off in higher graduation rates and other student successes.

Area athletes head to state

THUMBS UP:

Congratulations to area golfers and the Marshall baseball team. The golfers are recording competitive scores during the state golf tournaments, while the baseball team played at the University of Minnesota against Benilde Thursday evening.
