Short takes

Time to watch the Boys of Summer

THUMBS UP:

The Boys of Summer are back. Minnesota baseball fans have been enjoying the recent resurgence of the Twins. Currently sitting on top of the American League Central Division standings with a 32-16 record, the Twins have been a pleasant surprise. And the Marshall Independent’s Boys of Summer special section reminds us there is plenty of good baseball to watch right here in southwest Minnesota. Teams such as the Milroy Irish, Milroy Yankees, Minneota Mudhens and Tracy Engineers will provide a lot of good entertainment. Catch a game this summer.

Congratulations to our scholars

THUMBS UP:

This time of year reminds us of the amount of talent and intellectual potential that exists inside the Marshall Public Schools System. Many students were awarded honors and scholarships during ceremonies this past week. The smiles on the faces of those sitting in the audiences during these ceremonies show how proud the community is that so many of our youths are moving on to bigger opportunities.

More help for our farmers

THUMBS SIDEWAYS:

Farmers received some more help during these difficult times in agriculture when U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced Thursday that President Donald Trump is delivering another $16 billion in aid to farmers hurt by his trade policies. Perdue said the first of three payments will be made in July or August. Unfortunately, Perdue admits reaching a trade deal with China is unlikely before those payments are made.

Challenging times for senior care

THUMBS DOWN:

The news of the Colonial manor nursing home facility in Balaton closing is disappointing news. This will create challenging times for families looking for new homes for loved ones.
