FEMA still a bureaucratic mess

The word “frustrated” and the acronym FEMA often go hand-in-hand when it comes to news articles about aid for disaster relief.

So it wasn’t surprising to hear Lyon County Emergency Manager Tammy Overbeke tell commissioners on Tuesday “I’m really frustrated with the federal role in all of this.”

Overbeke reported that ice storms and flooding caused $688,000 worth of damage in Lyon County this spring according to estimates from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. She stated that the damage is eligible for federal assistance. That’s the good news.

Then she delivered the bad news: “The whole FEMA process has been challenging.”

Overbeke told commissioners that Lyon County still hasn’t received assistance dollars from last summer’s disaster declaration.

Complaints about FEMA’s slow response to deliver aid after weather events goes back years. The list of bureaucratic fumbling is long. And the list will probably get much longer with climate change expecting to create more violent weather events in the future.

FEMA has an obligation to taxpayers and weather victims to move faster.
