Canby education on the right track for success

On Oct. 1, the U.S. Department of Education announced the 2018 Blue Ribbon Schools. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

A total of 349 schools nationwide were recognized, including eight Minnesota schools — including one that is located right here in southwest Minnesota. A very proud Canby Superintendent Ryan Nielsen called the Independent right away to share the news that Canby Elementary is a 2018 National Blue Ribbon school.

Nielsen has a right to be proud. And so is Canby Elementary Principal Ryan Arndt.

“We have been consistently putting up good test scores over the last six or seven years in both reading and math,” Arndt said. “And last year, we reduced the achievement gap in math, which is a goal that was set up by the Minnesota Department of Education.”

Here’s an excerpt off the U.S. Department of Education website:

“The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. The National Blue Ribbon School flag gracing an entry or flying overhead is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning.”

That, in nutshell, is what Canby Elementary is all about. Arndt shared the school’s mission with the Independent. “It is to educate and empower each student with the skills, attitudes and abilities to succeed in life.”

Mission accomplished.
