Finally a decision on memorial funding

THUMBS UP:

The Lyon County Board finally made a decision on the funding for the Minneota-Ghent-Taunton Veterans’ Memorial. The board approved a motion to include $15,000 toward the $100,000 project in the 2018 county budget. Minneota American Legion Commander Jim Fink went before commissioners multiple times asking for some funding help. But commissioners argued for more time on making a decision that would be fair to all communities. The motion included another $15,000 for possible funding if there is a request made for help with a Marshall memorial. This was a reasonable decision.

Important partnership for area

THUMBS UP:

The fledgling shrimp business in southwest Minnesota received a boost when tru Shrimp and the Schwan’s Company announced they have formed a strategic partnership to help move inland shrimp production forward. Both companies bragged that the partnership would mean new opportunities. Ralco president and CEO Brian Knochenmus said the partnership will be a good fit because both companies have southwest Minnesota ties and global distribution, as well as similar missions and values. Hopefully the partnership will spur even more potential economic growth for the region.

Jack McLaughlin will be missed

THUMBS DOWN:

Hearts are broken throughout Marshall and the surrounding area with the news of John “Jack” McLaughlin’s death. The longtime businessman died Wednesday at age 90. Marc Klaith, whose father worked for McLaughlin, called him a Marshall icon. Longtime friend Willard Engel said wherever McLaughlin went, people knew him. McLaughlin, however was more than just a well-known businessman. He was also known for his generous contribution to his community. Last December, Prairie Home Hospice named its second hospice location in Marshall after him. That decision was made after continuous support by McLaughlin. Other projects supported by McLaughlin include Avera Marshall Medical Center, the cancer center, the Marshall Area YMCA and the Marshall-Lyon County Library. As Engel said, “he was a giver, not a taker.”
