MARSHALL--Muriel Cadwell, age 98, of Marshall, Minnesota, died peacefully and under the care of hospice on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at her home. Funeral Services are 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2026, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Marshall, Minnesota. A reception for attendees will follow at the church. Private interment will be held at a later date in the Marshall Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. The evening will conclude with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. followed by a time to share memories. Visitation will continue one hour prior to her celebration, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Monday, at the church. Livestream link and an online guestbook are available at www.hamiltonfh.com.
Muriel Eileen Norwood was born at home on their farm in Redwood Country, near Milroy, MN, to Sherman and Florence (Castle) Norwood on November 21, 1927, 2 days after a snowstorm. She attended country school in Districts 50 and 16. She graduated from Marshall HS as salutatorian in 1945. She attended Mankato State Teachers College for 2 years then taught elementary school in Russell, Buffalo Lake and Lamberton, MN. In 1970 she resumed teaching as a substitute and a tutor until 1995.
In Russell she met her future husband, Arthur Cadwell, when, as a senior, he delivered lunches to her room. Muriel and Art were engaged in 1952 before he left for 2 ½ years serving in the Air Force in Japan. They were married April 3,1954, were stationed in MI for 5 months until his discharge then returned to Stanley Township near Marshall where they lived and farmed until moving to Marshall in 2018.
Muriel was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Wesley United Methodist Church (now Cornerstone) in Marshall. She was an active member, teaching Sunday School, directing Christmas programs, and as a leader in the United Methodist Women. She and Art joined the Oasis Bible Study in 1985 where they formed lasting friendships that offered lifelong love and support.
Despite suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Muriel remained very active. She was a dedicated mother to her 4 daughters, was a busy farm wife and 4-H leader.
Her hobbies were oil painting, genealogy and making cards. Even at 98, she was found "painting" cards with colored pencils. If she received a visit, card, or letter from someone, they were sure to receive a hand-colored card shortly thereafter. She loved hosting family and friends. They often hosted overnight visitors, including a young woman from Brazil who became "family".
Muriel and Art enjoyed dancing over the years. They belonged to a square-dancing club and danced frequently at the "Chocolate Affair" in Minneota, MN – her last dance was in 2018 at age 90.
Muriel Cadwell died peacefully on September 17, 2026, at her home in Marshall, MN. She reached the age of 98 years, 9 months, and 27 days. Blessed be her memory.
She is survived by her 4 daughters, Janna (Craig) Cobb of Sioux Falls, SD, Maureen (Bruce) Stemme of St. Paul, Leanne Chesler of San Diego, CA, Denise (Aaron) Buesing of St. Paul; their "Brazilian daughter", Nancy (Ariel) Carvalho of Belo Horizonte, Brazil; grandchildren, Karen (Jeff) Kennedy, Mark Chesler, Matt (Trang) Chesler, Mandi (Brian) Hicks, Ehren Stemme, Ryan (Angie) Stemme, Nicholas (Jennie) Cobb, Heather Ferriere, Emily (Jesse) Lantgen, Eduardo (Brianna) Carvalho, Felipe (Marie-Jeanne) Carvalho, Austin (Rachel Beckwith) Stemme, Seth Buesing; 20 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Muriel was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Cadwell; parents, (Hilton) Sherman and Florence Norwood; brother, Ronald (Betty) Norwood; son-in-law, Harvey Chesler; and great-grandson, Colton Kennedy.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at Heritage Pointe Senior Living for the wonderful care they provided Muriel over the last 4 years.
