Howard Duane Steenhoven was born on December 22, 1945, in Worthington, Minnesota, to Arthur and Elva (Kruger) Steenhoven. He grew up with his family on a small farm 7 miles from Tyler, Minnesota, where he attended school and the First Baptist Church of Tyler. Howard was drafted into the United States Army in 1966. He went to military training at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, and then to Ft. Bliss, Texas, where he learned heavy artillery. Howard served in Da Nang, Vietnam, with the heavy artillery division from February of 1967 until February of 1968. He then concluded his military tour with six months' service in California. Howie moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1969 and worked various jobs before moving to Marshall, Minnesota.
Howie settled on a farm site just south of Marshall and spent his career working for the City of Marshall. For over 30 years, Howie operated backhoes, snowplows, and other heavy equipment before his retirement in 2007.
Howie loved his wife, Sandra, whom he married in 1982. He enjoyed having numerous animals on the farm site over the years. They also had two little dogs named Sport & Princess which Howie and Sandy spoiled constantly. Howie, Sandy, and son, Craig, spent years raising, training, and selling many fine quarter horses. They were proud to have repeat customers and offered boarding at their facilities. Howie also loved dealing with and tinkering with his cars or trucks and enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson Ultra Glide.
Over the years, Howie and Sandy enjoyed both long and short trips around the Midwest including Iowa, South Dakota, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Arizona, California, Nevada and Texas. They boated on Lake Yankton next to Balaton, Minnesota, and enjoyed stock car racing. Above all, they cherished time spent with their grandchildren. Howie also liked watching football, the Kentucky Derby, and Southern Gospel music on TV. He enjoyed going to concerts; one of his favorite songs was "I'll Fly Away."
Howard D. Steenhoven, passed away at his farm home following a struggle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife Sandra, family, and friends. Howie entered the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 8, 2026. Blessed be his memory.
