Kenneth “Ken” Versaevel

MARSHALL — The funeral service commemorating the life of Kenneth “Ken” Versaevel, 78, of Marshall will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Marshall. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall. Visitation will continue Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church. Interment with military honors will follow the service at the Marshall Cemetery. Military honors provided by U.S. American Legion Post 113 of Marshall.

Ken died Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall.

Kenneth Leon “Ken” Versaevel was born June 10, 1947, in Marshall, to William and Clarice (Boerboom) Versaevel. He grew up on the family farm near Cottonwood and graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1965. Although Ken had other jobs in his life, he always helped on the family farm. Ken enlisted and served in the U.S. National Guard. On Jan. 16, 1971, he was united in marriage to Suzanne “Sue” Geistfeld at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wood Lake. The couple made their home and raised their family in Marshall. Ken drove truck for the Floyd Wild Company for six years. He then worked as a Truck Mechanic for the Schwan Food Company for 38 years. After his retirement, he drove truck for Steve Coudron.

Ken was passionate about his faith and his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an active member of First Lutheran Church. He also believed in serving his community as he was a longtime fire fighter with the Marshall Fire Department, serving as fire chief, and was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post 113. Ken and Sue loved to travel, especially to Ixtapa, Mexico in the winter. They were fond of time spent at Nest Lake near Spicer. Ken was an avid woodworker and made many special items for his family, church, and others. For the last several years, Ken was dealing with frontal temporal dementia. He had lived at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center for the last 18 months.

He is survived by his wife, Sue, of Marshall, son Chris (Christine) Versaevel of Marshall, grandsons Noah and Carter, daughter Stephanie (John) DeVos of Marshall, grandchildren Brennan, Alexandra and Halle DeVos, siblings Leon (Vicki) Versaevel of Marshall, Eileen (Bruce) Fuhrmann of Marshall, Mary Miller of Mankato, Delores (Al) Fricke of Worthington, Tom (Shelly) Versaevel of Marshall, Joe (Karen) Versaevel of Marshall; in-laws Naomi (Bob) Burns of Salem, OR, and Jon (Wendy) Geistfeld of Rapid City, SD, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Clarice, in-laws Elmer and Gwen Geistfeld and brother-in-law Mark Miller.

Memorials preferred to the Marshall Fire Department, Avera @Home Hospice, or Prairie Home Hospice and Homecare of Marshall.
