BROOKLYN CENTER — Bernard F. Herzog passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026 at his home in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. He was 86.
Bernie was born on September 12, 1939, in Duluth, Minnesota. In his youth, Bernie’s family moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, where he graduated from McDonell Central Catholic High School in 1957. In 1964, two years after his honorary discharge from the U.S. Army, Bernie received a Bachelor of Science degree in Medicine from the University of South Dakota, where he met his future wife, Noel (Stewart) Herzog. Bernie and Noel fell in love at first sight and married on September 1, 1962, in Wayzata, Minnesota. After completing their undergraduate degrees, Bernie and Noel moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where Bernie received a degree as a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1966.
During Bernie’s medical training, medical residency and tenure as a naval medical officer, Bernie and Noel lived in various cities across the United States, welcoming their son Phil in Waukegan, Illinois; their daughter Ellen in Madison, Wisconsin; their son Ted in Milbank, South Dakota; and their son Dan in Marshall, Minnesota. He and Noel also lived in Yankton, South Dakota, where Bernie completed his medical training. In 1973, Bernie and Noel moved to Marshall, Minnesota, where Bernie joined the Weiner Memorial Medical Center, where he served as chief of staff for several years. In 1985, Bernie and Noel moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and built a house on Lake Wissota. Bernie was a sole surgical practitioner for several years in Chippewa Falls before joining the Marshfield Clinic’s Chippewa Falls location where he worked until his retirement in 2004. While living in Chippewa Falls, Bernie treated patients in Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire and Bloomer and served as chief of staff of both St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls and the Bloomer Hospital. Bernie was an active member of the Chippewa Falls community as a member of Kiwanis Club and of St. Charles Borromeo Church.
Bernie and Noel moved to the Twin Cities area in 2022, but they treasured their friendships in Chippewa Falls and retained many fond memories of their charming life on Lake Wissota.
Bernie was known for his devotion to his family, his dedication to both his patients and his medical colleagues, his love of classical music, and the great pride he took in his family’s accomplishments.
Survivors include his four children, Philip of Shoreview, Minnesota, Ellen (David Kuhny) of Niwot, Colorado, Theodore D. (Amanda Tibbs) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Daniel (Melissa) of Chaska, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Kwame Peter Herzog, Kojo Herzog, Kwame Matthew Herzog, Adam Tibbs, Joel Tibbs, Owen Herzog, Ava Herzog, and Anika Herzog; and one great-granddaughter, Skylar Herzog.
