Barbara Jean Piehl

Jan. 31, 1940-April 16, 2026

BROOKLYN PARK, MN–Barbara Jean Piehl, née Damm, age 86, of Brooklyn Park, MN, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at home surrounded by family. Barb will be remembered for her warmth, steady encouragement, and the way she made time with family and friends feel special.

Barb was born January 31, 1940, to Clarence and Bessie Damm in Arlington, South Dakota. As an only child–with loving aunts and uncles nearby–she was doted on and enjoyed every minute of it. On May 8, 1960, Barb married her high school sweetheart, Donald Piehl. They shared nearly 66 years, just 22 days shy of their 66th wedding anniversary. Barb and Don first made their home in Minneapolis, then moved to Marshall, Minnesota, in 1961, to be in a smaller town and closer to family. In Marshall, Barb made many lifelong friends through bridge club, extension club, and an active camping group. In 1987, they moved to Brooklyn Park, where they quickly made more friends and developed a strong sense of community. After retiring, Barb and Don enjoyed years of travel–visiting Hawaii and Denmark–and RV adventures to all other states, including a memorable drive to Alaska. Winters in Texas were a highlight, and Barb especially cherished the friendships she formed there with people from Canada, Oregon, Colorado, and many other places–friends who stayed in touch long after they stopped traveling south. Barb loved gardening and canning, crafting, and–especially–books and reading. She was happiest surrounded by family and friends, whether during a spirited game of Hand and Foot or when gathered together to make Christmas cookies.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Bessie Damm, of Arlington. She is survived by her loving husband, Don; her children, Jeff (Shari), Brad, and Gregg (Jennifer); six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren with another one on the way. Interment will take place at the Arlington, South Dakota cemetery at a future date. Memorials are encouraged to the American Diabetes Association, local book drives, or the charity of your choice.
