Alois “Al” Thielges

CANBY–Alois “Al” Thielges, age 92, of Marshall, MN formerly of Canby, MN, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2026 at the Prairie Hospice House in Marshall. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby, MN. Visitation will be Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Canby, MN. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby is entrusted with the arrangements.

Alois “Al” John Thielges was born on February 14, 1934 (Valentine’s Day) to Adam and Bertha (Dittberner) Thielges. He was the 10th of 15 children in the family, who lived near St. Leo, Minnesota.

He was baptized, received first communion and confirm at St. Leo Catholic Church in St. Leo, MN, and attended the St. Leo Catholic School through the 8th grade. His church and faith were very important to him.

At the age of 14, he started to help his father farm and worked various jobs in the area. On New Years’ Eve in 1954, he met Maryann Lauriers and said they danced throughout the evening and kissed at midnight. They dated from then until they married on September 29, 1956.

Al had been drafted and Maryann spent most of his service time with him. In the Spring of 1959 he started farming. He said 1960 was a good year, they had a good crop and their son Timothy was born.

In 1961, Al started working for the Canby Farmers Co-op, were he worked for 20 years. He worked in different areas with the Co-op and spent about 16 years managing the hardware department. In 1981, Al started working for the Canby VoTech in maintenance and was there about 15 years.

After retirement, he worked part-time at Jim’s Market and as a bus driver for Prairie Five. Al belonged to the 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus.

In August of 2001, Al met Ann Nielsen and they married in May of 2003, and he moved to Marshall, MN. Al enjoyed golfing, dancing, biking, YMCA exercising, cards, pool and traveling. In the earlier years, he had enjoyed his motorcycles.

Al is survived by his wife Ann; son Timothy (Karlene); step granddaughter, Morgan (Andrew Pippen) and their children: Margot and Jack; Ann’s children: Julie (Ray) Henriksen, Bob (Kelly) Nielsen and Jeff (Tina) Nielsen; Ann’s grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters: Sister Janet Thielges OSB and Lucille (Dave) Welu; sister-in-law, Kathleen Thielges and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Maryann Thielges, daughter-in-law, Jennifer Thielges; parents, siblings: Irene, Della (Ray) Forsblad, Art (Carol) Thielges, Rita (Oscar) Van De Wilde, Donald (Marge) Thielges, Luverne (Doris) Thielges, Matt Thielges, Marie (Hank) Stoks, Phyllis (Rex) Livermore, Ralph Thielges, Alice and Jeanette (Jerry) Hennen.
